HILL
William P. Hill
Nov. 24, 1804 - June 11, 1876
Born: November 24, 1804
Death: June 11, 1876
Married: Listed in the Marriages--Georgia to 1850
William P. Hill married Martha Carmen on July 1, 1824 in Jackson Co., GA
ALSO
William P. Hill married Martha Redding on April 4, 1836 in Monroe Co., GA
Validity Note: I believe Martha Carmen and Martha Redding may be the same person. I think they may have divorced in 1824 and remarried in 1836. I have to visit the marriage records in Carrollton and hopefully can confirm this.
Military Service: Unknown, possibly Civil War veteran
Children: William and Martha had one child, Naomi C Hill Leatherwood (1844-1918)
Headstone:
-
Style: tablet made of grey/blue slate
-
Symbols: Sun, sun disk, leaves or flowers
A sun is in the top center of the headstone with a simplistic sun disk across the top. A sun disk is a winged disk and the Egyptian symbol of the sun god Ra. It is symbolic of the power to recreate and means “God, Lord over all, Creator."
On either side of the sun is a plant stem with 5 heart shaped leaves or flowers.

Discrepancy Note:
Behind William and Martha are two unidentified plots: an adult size false tomb and a child size headstone.
A false tomb is a type of grave marker where a slab of stone or concrete covers the area of a grave and extends above the ground anywhere from a few inches to a couple of feet. A false tomb most frequently is boxy, but it may be rounded or otherwise embellished. It may have an accompanying gravestone, or it may bear an inscription itself. It is not a true tomb, since the burial is underground.

The false tomb has been cleaned once, unfortunately no identifying inscription has been seen yet.
The small headstone, lying near W. P. Hill's tablet, has been moved around so it's original orientation is unknown. The headstone has been cleaned with no distinguishable writing,
but a lamb can be seen at the top of the headstone.

The false tomb is in the lower left foreground.
Notice the lichen that was once on the back of Martha's headstone. One scrapping with a plastic scrapper and a cleaning has killed almost all of the lichen.
